Following the Diocese Vision for a 'Bigger Church to make a Bigger Difference; more people knowing Jesus and more justice in the world', we are passionate about young people finding a Christian community that will support and help develop them as modern day disciples!

In response to dwindling church attendance, especially of those in the 11-29 years old bracket, the Liverpool Next Generation (LNG) Project was launched in 2020. LNG is a 5 year project with the aiming of engaging well with young people, providing spaces for them to encounter God in schools and universities, with the hope of them joining a discipling community and finding a home in the local church. 

“We have long been concerned that we are missing a generation. A generation which, if we don’t try to reach, will be lost forever. It’s vital that we do this now for the good of the church. I pray that, as God is teaching us to be church in a new way, this funding will help us all learn to reach a generation afresh.” Bishop Beverley – Chair of The Missing Generations Project Board. 

Pioneering it here at St James in the City alongside St Barnabus, Penny Lane Church, the LNG project has taken shape through partnering with schools and delivering Schools Missional Chaplaincy work as well as Liverpool Universities to offer University Anglican Chaplaincy work. The LNG project follows a missional pathway that aims to bridge the gap for young people between Christian input within education and Christian community. 


Schools Missional Chaplaincy

The Schools Missional Chaplaincy team work across 3 local Anglican secondary schools - Archbishop Blanch, St Hilda's and St Margaret's. The team creates missional opportunities in the form of assemblies, big qeuestion events, lunchtime groups, Youth Alpha and christian unions for all year groups to attend and grow in faith.

They are passionate about engaging unchurched and dechurched young people by running drop-ins, songwriting, music and dance groups, all with a an introductory faith element. The fruit of this work has been incredible. We've seen young people from schools coming to youth group, church, our youth weekend away and HTB Focus! We are also pleased to be partnering with All Sasints Childwall in their project from May 2024. University Chaplaincy
The University Chaplaincy team are the chaplains for 2 universities; University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. The team have a cafe on UoL campus called Faith Express which is open 3 days a week with a timetable of Coffee and Chat, Mindful Art, International Students Cafe and plenty of board games and biscuits! They do free lattes with syrup options and flat whites which we can recommend! They have also run Alpha on campus and have seen many students transition into church community and thrive in their university life. If you're a student in Liverpool, why not go and see them!
